Barn fire kills cattle, family heartbroken

Fire claimed the lives of several calves and other animals in a barn fire, which destroyed what one family built their lives around.

"We were in the house and my husband happened to look out the window and saw the flames coming out of the barn," said Cari Waymire, who was at her home, 9219 Columbus-Xenia Road, along with her husband and children when the barn went up in flames around 10:45 p.m. Saturday.  "We came outside and started moving as much of our stuff as we could, trying to get to the animals."

While the family made the effort, they were unable to get inside the burning structure to save four 3-day-old calves, who were just purchased by the family Saturday.  The family also had two rabbits, hay  and other items inside the barn.  Waymire's husband lost his first tractor in the blaze.

"We can replace everything we've got.  It doesn't mean anything if we don't have our family," said Waymire

The outpour of support has already been felt by the family.  Friends called and responded to the property minutes after the fire erupted.

"Me and my family were both in a rush to get here," said Nick Hess, a family friend, who also worked on the farm with the Waymires.  "Thinking about what happened and what could be and what it was, it was devastating."

The engulfed barn sat only a few hundred feet from the family's house, and several other structures were on the property.  Horses were located in a nearby barn, but they were not hurt.

Firefighters from Madison Township, Harmony Township, Stokes Township and Cedarville responded to the fire, which took several hours to bring under control.  Crews fought the fire defensively from the beginning due to the proximity of the structure to the home, said fire fighters.

Despite all of the losses the family said they are going to move forward with their lives.  "It's hard, we're upset, the kids are upset," said Waymire.  "You know, we'll get through it.  We're a strong family.  We have a tight bond and this isn't going to affect that in any way, shape or form."

Steve Baker still most Recognizable Face in newspaper poll

For the third year in a row the readers of the Miami Valley Sunday News/Troy Daily News, with 56% of the vote, again selected NewsCenter 7's Northern Bureau Chief Steve Baker the "most recognizable face" in Miami County. The Mayor of Troy received 34%, while State Representative Richard Adams received 11%.

The same readers graded President Obama with a "F" in his performance as President of the United States, while Speaker of the House Boehner gets a mixed report card from readers in his own 8th Congressional District. It was a three-way tie for Mr. Speaker with the letter grades of  "B", "D", and "F" followed by a distant "C" and "A" at the bottom of the grade card.

Coca-Cola soundly out-drank Pepsi and other drinks were at the bottom of the bottle in the category of "Favorite Soda Pop" in the 2012 annual newspaper poll.

Baker said, "Thank you!"

Accused drive-by shooter aimed for girlfriend's brother

Police have arrested a man in his twenties in connection with an attempted shooting and accident.  26-year-old Adam Fox was arrested Saturday night on several charges including felonious assault and felony fleeing.

No one was hurt in the Saturday shooting attempt.

Dayton Police Sgt Mark Ponichtera says a personal dispute led to the attempted shooting on Samuel Street. Police found the suspect's car nearby.   Inside, officers found an unloaded holster.

The family of the man assumed to be the one Fox was allegedly shooting towards told News Center 7's Layron Livingston Fox had an on-again, off-again relationship with the man's sister.

The suspect switched cars, and was later involved in an accident on South Smithville and Argella.  The suspect's car hit a truck, which ran into a pole and broke it. The suspect took off and went to a house at 4211 Farnham where he has relatives.

Police say they made several attempts to get the man to surrender. They did get a small child and two women out of the house.

Officers finally called the SWAT team.  Members  made contact by phone, and  the suspect finally surrendered.

Sgt. Ponichtera says the suspect is being uncooperative.  The two women are also being uncooperative, and may face charges.

The truck driver and the suspect were both taken to the hospital for a check-up. The suspect will then be taken to the Montgomery County Jail.

Officers say that the suspect has a police record.  He will face charges of assault, and felony fleeing from police.
